Meet the New Codex CLI

Meet the New Codex CLI

More

Summary

OpenAI introduces a major update to the Codex CLI, its terminal-based coding agent, aimed at developers who prefer to work in the command line. The demo uses a playful project, a CLI for ordering a burrito plus a companion website, to show the new features.

The update brings a redesigned full-screen interface with scrollable output and a persistent message footer. A voice mode lets users start several tasks at once by speaking, such as extending the website, checking CLI tests for price changes and order confirmation, and generating a Mermaid diagram of the order flow. A new agents view, opened with the left arrow, lists running tasks that can be filtered, grouped by status, searched, and opened directly.

Users can also fork a conversation into a new worktree, keeping the same context in a separate checkout. Remote control lets people monitor tasks, answer questions, and review results from their phone while the work runs on their laptop. Other additions include usage analytics showing top chats, plugins, and skills, plus in-terminal rendering of Mermaid diagrams and LaTeX.

OpenAI says it will keep improving the CLI and invites feedback from terminal-focused developers.
