How To Use NotebookLM In Google Docs + Sheets!

More

Descriptions:

Google’s recent Gemini integration into Drive, Docs, and Sheets conspicuously omitted NotebookLM — but YouTuber Paul J. Lipsky found a workaround using Google Gems that effectively bridges the two products. Gems are customizable Gemini configurations with preset instructions and attached knowledge sources, accessible via gemini.google.com. By creating a Gem that points to a NotebookLM notebook as its knowledge source, then activating that Gem inside Google Docs or Sheets through the Gemini sidebar, users gain the ability to query notebook contents while working inside Drive’s editing environment.

The tutorial walks through two end-to-end examples. In the first, a travel notebook containing flight confirmations, hotel reservations, and event details is used to generate a formatted itinerary directly inside Google Docs, complete with confirmation numbers and check-in times. In the second, a research notebook about OpenClaw is used to draft a full YouTube script matched to a personal writing style and document template — something native NotebookLM report generation cannot replicate. Lipsky notes that the Gemini sidebar in Drive currently requires a paid Gemini subscription and has limited regional availability, but expects broader rollout over time. The workflow is notable because it solves a real gap: NotebookLM is strong for organizing research, but its built-in document generation lacks formatting control and iterative editing.
