Getting Started with Claude Cowork

Descriptions:

Anthropic’s official Claude channel released this introductory walkthrough for Claude Cowork, now generally available in the Claude desktop app on Mac and Windows for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. Cowork is positioned as a task-delegation layer distinct from standard Claude chat: rather than collaborating step by step, users hand off a complete task and Claude executes it autonomously while the user focuses on other work.

Setup involves three components: connecting local folders (Claude requests explicit permission before modifying the file system and supports multiple simultaneous folder connections), linking cloud services like Google Drive, Notion, and Slack through built-in connectors, and optionally enabling the Claude Chrome extension for browser-based task execution including webpage reading, data extraction, and tab navigation. Per-session global instructions can be configured in settings — for example, defaulting all file output to Word documents instead of Markdown.

The video demonstrates the core interaction model through a file organization task: Claude scans a cluttered Downloads folder, proposes a categorization plan with naming conventions and flagged duplicates, waits for user approval, incorporates feedback (keeping two files the user wanted to preserve), then executes the full reorganization directly on the local file system. Sessions are stored locally on the device, and the desktop app must remain open during task execution. The video explicitly frames Cowork as delegation with oversight — Claude handles execution while users retain judgment over the plan.
