Amazon Web Services has announced a formal long-term partnership with OpenAI, bringing GPT-5.4 to Amazon Bedrock in preview starting today and GPT-5.5 expected within weeks — a significant competitive realignment given that OpenAI’s frontier models were previously only available to enterprise customers through Microsoft Azure or directly via OpenAI’s own API. The deal includes a new jointly developed capability called Managed Agents featuring OpenAI, designed to let AWS customers build stateful, production-grade agent applications entirely within the Bedrock ecosystem without requiring cross-cloud infrastructure.
Alongside the OpenAI announcement, AWS launched the Amazon Q desktop application, an enterprise AI assistant that integrates with email, Slack, and local desktop data, building persistent context about coworkers and communication patterns over time. The partnership directly addresses a gap AWS customers had flagged — the need to route workloads to Azure purely for access to OpenAI models.
