Amazon Inks Deal with OpenAI, Plans New AWS Applications

More

Descriptions:

Amazon Web Services has announced a formal long-term partnership with OpenAI, bringing GPT-5.4 to Amazon Bedrock in preview starting today and GPT-5.5 expected within weeks — a significant competitive realignment given that OpenAI’s frontier models were previously only available to enterprise customers through Microsoft Azure or directly via OpenAI’s own API. The deal includes a new jointly developed capability called Managed Agents featuring OpenAI, designed to let AWS customers build stateful, production-grade agent applications entirely within the Bedrock ecosystem without requiring cross-cloud infrastructure.

Alongside the OpenAI announcement, AWS launched the Amazon Q desktop application, an enterprise AI assistant that integrates with email, Slack, and local desktop data, building persistent context about coworkers and communication patterns over time. The company is also expanding Amazon Connect deeper into enterprise verticals including healthcare, supply chain, and contact centers, positioning these as application-layer bets on top of its established infrastructure and Bedrock model marketplace. Codex, entering Bedrock preview simultaneously, was cited as an early demand signal: the tool grew from two million to four million users in just a few weeks.

The partnership directly addresses a gap AWS customers had flagged — the need to route workloads to Azure purely for access to OpenAI models. Bedrock now offers GPT alongside Anthropic Claude, Amazon Nova, and a range of open-weight models, letting enterprises consolidate on a single cloud stack. AWS framed the OpenAI integration as the start of ongoing co-invention rather than a static distribution agreement.
