Descriptions:
Bloomberg Tech sits down with AI pioneer Kai-Fu Lee to get his first-hand reaction to Moonshot AI’s launch of Kimi K3, the latest frontier model out of China. Lee praises the model’s performance and confirms his company will integrate it into its own products, while noting the broader significance of open-source models catching up to their closed-source counterparts — a trend he sees as particularly important for enterprises that require on-premise deployment and are reluctant to send data to the cloud.
The conversation pivots to Lee’s own company, which has dramatically shifted strategy over the past year. Rather than continuing to invest in building and fine-tuning its own foundational model (the E Series), the firm has refocused entirely on enterprise AI applications, specifically a product called Boss AI — designed to give CEOs a unified view of company data to drive financial performance. Lee says bookings have grown three to four times year-over-year and that profitability is expected sometime in 2027.
Lee also offers a sweeping assessment of the US-China AI race across model, application, consumer software, and hardware layers — arguing that the US will capture more profit while China will command larger market share, particularly in enterprise AI transformation where he sees Chinese firms’ willingness to do deep on-site customer work as a durable competitive advantage. Export controls on Nvidia GPUs, he contends, have largely failed as a containment strategy.
