Descriptions:
Greg Isenberg hosts directory builder Frey on the podcast to walk through the complete process of building an SEO-driven online directory business using Claude Code — from sourcing raw data to cleaning, enriching, and publishing it as a traffic-generating website.
The episode opens with real examples of profitable directories: Parting.com, a funeral home comparison site with 61,000 monthly organic visitors and over $1 million in reported annual revenue built partly on vertical SaaS upsells, and A Place for Mom, a senior living directory operating at much larger scale. These benchmarks frame the business model before Frey dives into the technical workflow.
The core data pipeline starts with multiple raw CSV exports containing tens of thousands of listings (in Frey’s case, 71,000 portable sanitation businesses), then uses a structured Claude Code prompt to eliminate junk records — no business name, permanently closed, off-niche big-box retailers — reducing the dataset to around 20,000 clean entries. From there, Crawl4AI, a free open-source LLM-friendly web crawler, is installed locally and combined with Claude Code to automatically visit each remaining business’s website and classify whether it fits the target niche (luxury restroom trailers vs. standard porta-potty companies). The entire enrichment workflow runs without manual review, making it viable for non-developers. Frey emphasizes that he learned Claude Code within the last six months with no prior programming background.
