Summary
Simulon, the AR and visual effects startup first covered in 2023, is back with a mobile app that lets filmmakers place AI-generated characters into real environments. Theoretically Media tests it hands-on, starting with a character reference image that Simulon converts into a 3D asset, which can then be scaled, rotated, and positioned in the live camera view.
The host demonstrates a miniature flamethrower character on a desk, a character sitting at a studio bar, and two characters playing tennis at a local court. Because the footage uses a real camera move and location, there is no world-model hallucination, and the approach allows specific camera moves that video models often struggle with, including breaking the 180-degree rule. Rendering is not yet real time, and the controls can be finicky. The output can also be fed into video-to-video models like Kling for restyling.
The video also covers Artlist’s new 3D model category, featuring Tripo 3D, Hunyuan 3D, and Meshy V7, along with the browser-based open-source tool Cozy Clay as an alternative to Blender. The video is sponsored by Artlist.
