Anthropic has unveiled the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), an open framework that enables Claude to directly control physical laboratory equipment through natural language. The announcement is presented through a documentary-style video following neuroscientist Arco Bast and Anthropic researcher Tom Brown, who collaborated to generalize a hardware-agnostic communication layer that lets any two scientific devices be bridged via AI.
The demonstrations are hands-on and varied: Claude operates a custom two-photon microscope (adjusting laser power to 50%, navigating magnification without crashing into samples), controls a robotic arm within defined safety boundaries (refusing out-of-range movements autonomously), interfaces with a Leica microscope from Danaher without prior documentation, and writes a live tracking script that follows algae specimens for several minutes in real time. At Genentech, MHS is shown applied to pharmaceutical testing workflows involving iterative compound screening.
The central productivity claim is that experimental setup — estimated to consume roughly 80% of a scientist’s working time — could be compressed dramatically. Tasks requiring two years of PhD-level hardware integration work could potentially be reduced to two months, freeing researchers for the biological questions themselves. MHS is positioned as a universal hardware protocol analogous to USB: once a device is MHS-compatible, any Claude-powered agent can operate it without device-specific programming.
