Bedrock Robotics CEO joins Bloomberg Tech to announce what the company describes as the first fully autonomous heavy construction equipment system deployed commercially in the United States. The Bedrock Operator is a retrofit sensor and compute stack — combining cameras, LiDAR, and NVIDIA chips — that can be installed on existing excavators and other machinery on-site in a few hours without requiring OEM redesign, and is described as 100% reversible.

The company currently has three paid commercial deployments with contractors Sun Construction, Zachary, and Champion Site Prep, covering projects ranging from water treatment facilities to large-scale earthwork jobs involving millions of cubic yards of material. Autonomous systems are already approaching human operator productivity and can extend operating hours beyond standard shifts, compressing project schedules in ways that human labor constraints currently prevent.

The underlying market driver is a deepening labor shortage in construction. Excavator operators require years of training to become proficient, and retirement rates are outpacing new entrants as demand surges from data center buildouts, onshoring manufacturing, housing construction, and infrastructure projects. Bedrock’s CEO frames the labor bottleneck not merely as a construction industry problem but as a constraint on the broader economy’s ability to build the physical infrastructure that AI and other industries require.
