Mage-Flow is a compact 4B-scale stack from Microsoft Research for speedy text-to-image generation, as well as instruction-based image editing.
The stack is built from two co-designed components:
1. Mage-VAE, a lightweight high-fidelity latent tokeniser
2. A Native-Resolution Multimodal Diffusion Transformer (NR-MMDiT) trained with rectified flow matching.
They provided 2 different models – Mage-Flow for text-to-image generation and Mage-Flow-Edit for the image editing. Additionally, each ships in Base, RL-aligned, and 4-step Turbo variants with sizes as low as just 4GB!
If that isn’t enough, Mage-Flow models also support native resolutions from 512 up to 2048 pixels per side – including fun dimensions like 4:1.
This is all very well and good, but how does it compare to something of a similar size, such as Klein 4B? Time to find out!
